Roger and Deb Nerland - 2442 Xircus Ave, Williams, IA Roger Nerland’s grandfather, Pete Nerland, purchased t he farm in 1936 and built the barn in 1956. It was home for cattle and hogs and storage for hay and straw. Now it is used to store machinery.
An article about the builder of the barn appeared in a book titled Corncribs in History, Folklife, and Architecture (written by the builder’s son) as well as a newsletter distribut ed by the Iowa Barn Foundation. Jim Roe was known as a rural carpenter, constructing mostly corncribs, barns and other farm structures. He built hundreds of corncribs and such from the 1940s to the 1960s close to home around Williams, Ellsworth, Jewell, Kamrar and Webster City, and was in high demand. Roe acquired his talents by working with his brothers in the 1920s for 25¢ an hour.
