Stacy and Becky Young - 1571 330th St., Stratford, IA The Young farm has been in the family since Darrell’s great-grandfather, Andrew Bocklund purchased the property on May 6, 1892. The story begins with Jonas Young, who came to the United States from Sweden looking for farm work. He and a friend approached Andrew Bocklund for work, but Bocklund could only hire one man. The friends flipped a coin with Young winning the toss. He later married Bocklund’s daughter Hilda. Darrell says, “I’m here by the flip of a coin.”

The barn quilt was placed on the acreage’s corn crib, now the oldest building on the property and because it faces the road. It’s original function was to hold earn corn, and it has overhead bins for oat storage. Today it houses farm trucks.

The dala horse design is appropriate for the Swedish heritage of the Youngs. The dala horse was first carved as a child’s toy in the 1700s in Sweden.
